Fruit Tree Care

Picture
Fruit trees drape our landscapes throughout the Rocky Mountain Region, many having genetic links to wild and native plants that were here long before us.

Fruit trees bring people together and touch all of our senses. Creating annual traditions from family photos with the backdrop of flowers to fruit picking and pie making; fruit trees are a part of our life experience and an invaluable component of the urban forest.

Known as low maintenance, low cost, and low risk trees; fruit trees are a worthy investment and addition to the landscape. With an informed approach to care, you can be sure to receive the most from your fruit trees, for generations to come!

Growing Trees Is Human

Picture
Have you noticed we bring trees nearly everywhere we go?

We build a new hospital, we plant trees. We pave a new road, we line it with trees. New shopping center, park, memorial; trees are in the budget. And the last thing to go into a new neighborhood, you guessed it - trees!

We drag trees around like Linus drags his blanket, sucking our proverbial thumbs in their shade. We never go too far without trees, because like Linus's blanket, they bring us security and happiness.

Growing trees, is very much a human trait. Were we aliens looking out at Earth and documenting human behaviors; we would note that wherever humans go, they bring trees.

Trees Can Live Forever

Picture
Trees can live forever - this is one of my favorite facts to share with people!

Trees are generating organisms, whereas we are regenerating organisms. While we regenerate new cell tissues in old places, trees generate new cells in new places.

You've noticed that trees get bigger, yes? This is exactly what I mean!

Trees grow at their edges, taking up more and more space around them, and are designed to do so, infinitely!

Branches finish each year by building buds at their ends. Inside these buds are next year's new twigs, complete with leaves and compressed to microscopic form. If you go out in fall and nab one of these buds, dissect it with a sharp razor and look at it under a microscope, you'll see next year's new growth packed in dense insulation. You can count the leaves and see their veins - it's pretty rad!

The Universe Inside a Tree

Picture
The girl asked, “is the tree sad to lose its leaves?”

The master paused, “nothing is lost.”

The girl replied, “I have watched this tree every year. I watch the tree grow new leaves each spring. I watch the tree hold its leaves all summer. Then I watch every leaf change color and fall to the ground.”

The master smiled, “there is no such thing as a tree without its leaves.”

"Master, I have watched you admire the falling leaves, even helped you collect them for your paintings. Please don’t play these word games with me today.”
